Well, I simply don't know how Mr. Obama can come to this conclusion, considering he is a former lawyer who is supposed to have excellent logic.
Not divided? Let's see:
In terms of life expectancy, male black Americans have an average of 71 years, compared with 76.5 for white Americans. That's comparable to countries like El Salvador and Guatemala. Even Iraqi men can expect to live one year longer. In Canada, the life expectancy for men is 79 years.
In terms of household income, black Americans make $34000, compared with $58000 for white Americans (70% more) and $67000 for Asian Americans (almost 100% more).
Education level: the percentage of black Americans who hold associate degree or higher between 25-29 is 24%, compared with 41% for White Americans and 66% for Asian Americans. Latinos are even lower at 16%.
Of course it is well known the percentage of adult males incarcerated for black people is 7 times as high as white Americans.
If the black Americans form a country of its own, it will be a completely different one from the one we know as the USA, with a completely different culture, mentality and of course the factors mention above.
So, I don't know how Mr. Obama can pull a straight face and say we are not divided.
What he probably meant was that we're not as divided as he would like us to be. So far, he's done an excellent job dividing the nation, not just by race but by economic status and law abiding vs. criminals. He is a king; the king of "Divide and conquer!"
