Give me a break: they pay sales tax and a few others, but they do not pay much and they get tax credits. For every $ they pay in taxes they get about $10 back in government handouts, probably even more like $100 in benefits. Again you are getting your wrong information from slanted sites.
This is a reputable site that presents accurate information. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not true.
Lot of poor people do not get anything back in government handouts. Definitely nothing back on the scale that oil companies, etc. get back.
In any case, don't run those folks down. Poor red states are the Republican base.

Liberals want government to be a buffer against the robber barons. Hence environmental regulations, labor laws, banking laws, national parks ...
Conservatives (not sure why they are called this as they don't want to conserve anything, really) want minimal government interference in the robber barons' schemes.
