I don't really get why people say this kind of thing. God/Jesus said to take care of your neighbor, sure. That means you do what you can to help them. He didn't say "force your neighbor to help people". In fact, he says not to take from your neighbor or covet what they have.
wow if that was not a twist and a tweark
God -do all to help one another--law
God- give to Caesar what is Caesars - law
Caesars - we will do what God said- help one another- law in question
Free health care is such an emotional issue. There's a big part of me that says "of course!" But then knowing how much humans take things for granted when things are "free" give me pause.
Also, free health care and open borders seems like a recipe for disaster... not to mention the "sue happy" society we live in. My English hubby says that easily suing the medical profession isn't a thing in England... at least when he still lived there.
I once visited a free clinic there in London in a mall briefly for some minor issue that just needed some medicine. It was nice that it was free... never mind the 17 % sales tax on the pair of shoes I just bought. On the other hand, having a high sales tax does force "everybody" to pay... although many do without because of it.
My husband's grandmother was on a waiting list for a knee surgery for 4 years before she gave up, and his step mother just recently had back surgery. Took over 6 months to get in to see a specialist, another 6 months to have the surgery, and afterwards sent home with pain medication. No physical therapy. She's a little better, but not much.
Anyway, it's a dilemma... I feel for those scared about losing their Obamacare even if me and my husband (who became a flag waving citizen of the U.S. a couple of years ago) have a Libertarian view on many things these days.
Are you suggesting that every individual tax payer should get to choose exactly what their individual tax "contribution" goes towards?
I bet ants aren't able to get out of their social contracts either... we are social animals we make some decisions based on the good of the group over the good of the individual. The morality of it is irrelevant since that is the reality of the situation and has been for all of recorded human history. Figure out what you can do from inside that framework instead of railing against it, if it hasn't changed in the past 10,000 years it probably isn't going to change now regardless of how good of a philosophical case can be made against it.

Nah I am above all a realist. Libertarian philosophy appeals to me, I think we could do with a large shift in that direction. But there is no such thing as a one size fits all answer or philosophy and to think we would have a society that is tax free, or tax voluntary, or taxes us only for things that we like and want to support is a pipe dream fantasy.

So we're not forced to pay taxes?
"Do all to help one another" - including breaking some of the Ten Commandments?
"Give to Caesar what is Caesar's" - Our money and property don't belong to Caesar/the government. (I love this one because it was very clever on Jesus' part)
Does someone who's fat and smokes have a "right" to my taxes when they have a heart attack?
Here's a question I have that's similar. Does any parent who has stupid children either due to health defects or they are just terrible parents and that kid happens to not succeed in school have a "right" to my taxes as well? Does anyone who's stupid enough to "accidentally" set their house on fire has a right to my taxes? ... I can go on and on.
Envision for a moment if you will the scale of the government bureaucracy that would be required to process the taxes of ~500,000,000 people when every single one of those people is able to line item earmark the places their taxes go. You wanna talk about big government?

So big government with "bureaucracy" (essentially necessary for today's complex world to get stuff done) is somehow different from tens of hundreds of smaller insurance companies with their own bureaucracy?
