Imagine the number of partial credits and dropped classes that are forthcoming. If they don't pay for it it will be a scheduling nightmare.
So what happens with socialist ideas is 1. The service is crap. 2. They only offer what can be afforded so you will wait in lines for 'free school'. 3. The black market, for profit schools

I think free college is a BAD idea.

I'd prefer a more European model.
College would be free, but spots in the school would only be open to the top 5 to 10% of students.
Students who are not top will have to pursue a trade or go to a state/private college, and PAY for it.

The key thing is that college should be harder to get into, and those top students should get a free education

Geez, California is a state. San Francisco is a city in that state. Do you know what a Socialist Republic is?
As far as your neighbors being from CA I hope you realize they were actually from some flyover state and at least had the gumption to leave Mom's basement, well maybe not by their choice, came to CA cause they thought they could play on the beach by day and party all night but were forced out because the CA dream is for people that can contribute to it so they are the losers that settle for living in your neighborhood in TX, That is why they are called settlers.

That's almost what I said, and no one seemed to agree

Sorry but if you think 2017 is the same as when you were a kid out of high school, get real. Times have changed and still change, either keep up or fall behind. Welcome to capitalism.

Countries with practically free college:
Norway
Finland
Sweden
Germany
Slovenia
France
Dig a little deeper and see who actually is allowed to attend college.

I'd be okay with the Euro model but it would have progressives howling if we tried it over here.

Except the top 5-10% can consist of rich kids that have no responsibility thru their K=12 years and their drama that is hidden in business trips, psychiatric sessions and boarding schools.

College is too late to start educating our youth. We need to go back to teaching children and actually TAKING care of them when they are under 18. A child should not sit through a class hungry or worrying if they have a safe place to sleep that night.

THEN we can decide who will get free education as an adult.

I had mentioned a compromise to have the college subsidy go on a sliding scale in inverse relation to Senior year GPA, so the 4.0 students 100% subsidy, 2.5 student would only have to pay 38% of the tuition, but a 1.0 or less student would get no subsidy. Again this is a compromise. I'd rather see no one pay tuition, but then again, people on this site consider me a Communist (even though I'm not)

No! CA treats its homeowners right. Your property taxes are 1% of your purchase price plus any VOTER approved increases. AND your assessed value is CAPPED at 2% max! Yeah Prop 13. Now in backward states people pay $3-6,000 for little $200,000 properties. EVERY YEAR! Sucks to be a retiree in those states.

This FREE education is not costing anyone more property taxes.

Yeeeeeepppppppp

Or they finish the 4 year program and have a worthless degree, and wind up working at McDonalds anyway.
