Meryl Streep just landed herself the award for biggest cheapskate — according to Karl Lagerfeld.
The head designer for Chanel told Women's Wear Daily that the fashion house was making a custom gown for the 67-year-old actress to wear to the Oscars when she cancelled last minute in favor of a designer that would pay her to wear their dress.
"
She picks a dress from his new Couture line and has him modify it for her (raise the neckline) - no problem, Couture is all about "custom". The dress is specifically made for one woman, exactly to her measurements and specifications. It's a $105,000 dress and she get's it for free - the dress costs her NOTHING because she is a famous actress and will wear it to the Oscars.
The kicker is that CheapyStreep calls and says we won't want that dress because we not only require "Free Dress" - we also want the Designer and giver of the FREE DRESS to pay Ms CheapyStreep to wear the dress. We want FREE and PROFIT.
Chanel/Karl Lagerfeld said - "We do free, we don't do "pay to wear Free".
The news article was in Women's Wear Daily -- which IS the Fashion Bible for any Couture News.
CheapyStreep denies of course -- but I can't imagine an ICON like Karl Lagerfeld would give this news out to WWD unless it was absolutely true. He is taking heat for both not Paying CheepyStreep to wear his FREE $105,000 dress but also for daring to out Her Celebrity Cheapness.
Good for him. His parting shot to her was "she can keep the FREE $105,000 dress, it was made for her and wouldn't fit anyone else." So true.
True. The Hollywood crowd loves to live large while preaching fairness to everyone else.
I once heard on tv that the number one event for private jet use was the Cannes Film Festival. Flying over, they probably talk about how flyover country destroys the climate with their SUVs and pickup trucks.

Quite a few of them are absolutely hypocrites in that regard, yes.
Some are reasonably responsible eco-citizens. They tend not to be the A-list types, though.

I understand that practically EVERY crowd has its hypocrites, but Hollywood seems to have more than its share. Hollywood is the guy in the 15 items or less line with 60 items.
If you read the article they don't actually attribute the quote to a specific person. I'm wondering what the original source is since the Streep team's quotes are both form other media sources. It would also be nice to know a timeline because surely that dress would have had to have been the in the works for a while.
And as someone who actually admires Meryl Streep I find it very doubtful she is wearing something of a runway. Nicole Kidman maybe, the new first lady maybe, but Meryl Streep is not the body type or height of a runway model. They'd be doing a lot more than adjusting a hemline.
