The first isn't even close to the truth but many residents here are just plain stupid. He has also stressed he's more interested in making Maryland work better than he is in national issues. Although you have to keep in mind that there are jurisdictions in the State which allow illegals to vote and some of those same towns are de facto sanctuary cities as are a couple Counties.
The Democrats did the same thing to Ehrlich with Bush and it worked so they see no need to stop now.

But people are increasingly sick of what you describe.
I know from my own state: Maine has always been pretty liberal (the best we could muster was an Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins). Then along came a Trumpian governor in 2010, Paul LePage. VERY conservative, and very controversial, and non-politically correct. Well, the left, including many national groups, focused on him like a laser beam, because people like him succeeding in a place like Maine represents an existential threat to their old way of doing business. They spent HUGE amounts of money to take him down. But whereas he narrowly won in 2010 (in a three way race), in 2014 he won going away against a strong, Democrat candidate who had sat in Congress for years. He just attacked THEM for every time they attacked him. And the people saw through all of the standard, liberal political crap.
(It was a true precursor of Trump's victory).
