Do you sincerely care about what grade levels politicians speak at or is it selective based on partisan reasons? There is an advantage to speaking in a manner that is clear to all or in a unique style that stands out.
It's mostly about the preparation to become a polished speaker. If you stick to the speech prepared by professional writers and spend a lot of time in mock debates/question taking, you will come off as a good speaker.
Trump doesn't stick to scripted speeches for the most part, and it's been reported that he does very little debate prep.
When he addressed congress, he stuck to the prepared speech and presented well.
Many people are sick and tired of these scripted moments and want their leaders to be off the cuff.
BTW, probably one of the most well received and best off the cuff moments in recent history came from Bush at ground zero.
Many people also prefer a well-spoken president.
JFK was very unscripted, but managed to be witty, intelligent and speak well--check out some of his press conferences. Obama spoke well off the cuff, also. If you watch him, he stops and thinks for a moment to gather his thoughts before answering questions. Trump doesn't think before speaking ever, and comes off sounding like a dolt.
Be honest and stop making excuses for this man. Trump is a blowhard who can't even compose an intelligent tweet. He always has been and always will be. You can always tell when someone else has written tweets for him. The guy does not sound close to intelligent or presidential if he doesn't have a script in front of him.

Yes, idiots vote and they vote for both parties.
The purpose of communicating during a Presidential campaign is to win. Who did best there? You don't get style points.
Absolutely, that was his greatest appeal to the people who voted for him...........he spoke on their level.
I've been in sales most of my life, and the one thing a good salesperson learns is that you quickly determine what language will fit the potential customer you are trying to sell to at that moment. I can discuss things on one level when selling to the CEO of a major company, and then speak on a whole nuther level when talking with someone who does manual labor for a living.
It is like matching the bait to the kind of fish you are going after, and Donald Trump is a very skilled salesman. As much as I dislike the guy, he IS a good salesman...........and he knows how to con people too. The people he wooed were fed up with "smart talkin' politicians " so his childish vocabulary struck a cord with them. Even when he went into his goofy antics on stage, they ate it up.
But, yes, otherwise he is an uneducated buffoon with a very limited vocabulary.
Nailed it. That's a good summary of how he got elected. And let's give him some credit--when he toyed with the idea of running, he must have seen this glaring vacant space that no one else was paying attention to--a huge subset of the American population that wanted to be heard and knew no one was listening. He paid attention to them. He listened. He learned what they wanted to hear, and he said it to them. That's a lesson for future would-be leaders. You dismiss a group of people as unimportant, they WILL get attention one way or another.
Thought it would be lower. But hey, who cares? He's a billionaire, right? He can cure cancer if he wants.
On the Flesch-Kincaid test, it had a grade level of 1.7.
