It's 17. It would have been nice if the article had told us what she's being charged with, because I'm not aware of how this constitutes a crime in Texas.
The law is improper relationship between educator and student, it is a second degree felony.
Sometime later on during the court proceedings, it would be nice if the lad showed some stones by answering her lawyers questions during any cross examination with things like "I enjoyed every second of the experience and would do so again if the occasion arose". Or "no I do not consider myself forever damaged emotionally by this experience." Or "Betsy Lou, my new girlfriend wants to thank her for showing me the way to make her holler in time to Clarence Carter's - Strok'in."
I'd like to think when rational questions are asked; it relates only to her abusing a position of 'assigned trust' and letting it go at that. This 17 year old was old enough to make some other adult decisions that would impact his life far more than a dalliance with his attractive anatomy teacher.
Assigning the role of victim to this boy for this occurrence in his life is totally inappropriate to him and the system. He's certainly not going to, and no one should encourage him to think of himself as having been victimized.

Again, if a teen girl said all of those things in court regarding her experiences with an older man, it would probably hurt his case, not help it. Nor would anyone try to explain to her that she wasn't victimized, even if she didn't feel she was.
Oh please 17 years old, possibly a senior graduating in a couple of months... and she's a 20something cutie. I'm sure the 17 year old guy was crying The principal was probably jealous that's why she got arrested
I'm so tired of double standards in our society. If this had been a young male teacher sleeping with a 17yr old female student, people would have their pitchforks out and ready. But because the teacher is young, white, and attractive, and "boys will be boys", she gets a free pass from some folks.
Even if the teacher is not that much older than the student, her job is to educate and act as a mentor to students. A mentor shouldn't be having sex with students.
And to add to this, I'm really sick of feminists acting like women are so discriminated against and not equal to men. It may be true in some cases, but in some cases, the reverse is true. Society doesn't even trust men around children younger than a certain age. Fathers get weird looks going to the park with their own sons and daughters.

I'm a feminist and I agree with you but not because of equality issues. If women were truly equal to men, in society's eyes, stories like this wouldn't garner such responses. Because women are looked at as weak, society tends to see their crimes differently than when a man commits the same crime. When we acknowledge that men and women are equally responsible and entitled to freedom of choice, then I think we'll see more equal treatment under the law.
