To those who think America is headed towards a single payer system. This is unlikely to happen. Single payer isn't the only way to achieve universal health care for America. Most countries that have universal coverage don't even use a single payer approach.

Which Countries Have Single-Payer Health Systems?
There are fewer than many people might think. Most European countries either never had or no longer have single-payer systems. "Most are basically what we call social insurance systems," says Gerard Anderson, a professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who has studied international health systems. Social insurance programs ensure that almost everyone is covered. They are taxpayer-funded but aren't necessarily run by the government.
As far as countries that have true single-payer systems, Anderson lists only two: Canada and Taiwan.
My sister moved to Canada 20 years go and LOVES her Canadian healthcare. She and her family have never had any issues with getting the care the need and don't have to worry about bankruptcy for unforseen medical expenses.

I think lots of people refer to "single payer" as sort of a catch-all phrase for any form of universal health care, either because it is what they are most familiar with, or because they don't realize there are other ways of achieving this goal. I didn't realize until recently how many options there are, and am probably guilty of having misused the term, myself. Same with the phrase "socialized medicine." Lots of people use it, usually critics of universal coverage. Few people use it accurately.

I'm starting to think maybe people in Canada just tell Americans whatever they think they want to hear. I have heard an equal amount of stories about Canadians who love their healthcare system and Canadians who hate their healthcare system. They seem to tell Americans who seem to want a similar system how great it is and to tell those who seem to be against it how horrible it is. Maybe they just don't want an argument.
I'm all for a single payer healthcare system. A system where every single person who wants healthcare pays for their own.
The problem is that liberals demand that THEY do NOT pay for their own... you just have to look at Social Security and see what the liberals demand to confirm that... around the world, everybody pays for their own in single payer systems...

My American born sister would tell me if her Canadian healthcare sucked. Trust me.
I can say my American health insurance definetly sucks and I work for a major health insurance carrier lol....

Not likely that a sister would not speak the truth to another sister -- lol....
I'm originally from Canada -- moved to the USA in 1997. I hate the American system, don't feel I get better care at all. I am always wondering if my health care is motivated by what I need or profits. 20 years and I can't shake that feeling.
Don't forget -- like the USA -- in Canada there is not one system and people live in very different communities. Some don't have the resources that others have -- just like here.

Of course. I've never heard anyone say anything different regarding their anecdotal source from over the border.
