One of the most revealing findings of the Trump-Russian investigation so far is the detail on how the Russians have used the Internet to spread disinformation to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election, by deploying Internet bots to rapidly spread pro-Trump and anti-Clinton propaganda. The end goal of the USSR and Russia has always been to influence the political direction of the USA and ultimately to destabilize the country. Now they are using the Internet to subvert the American democratic process, and to poison our political discourse. It's a dream come true for them. Cheap and effective.
The good news is that there is broad consensus in Congress that the Russians did indeed engage in deliberate sabotage of our election. Yesterday, Marco Rubio made the following comment on the topic: "Aren’t we in the midst of a blitzkrieg, for a lack of a better term, of informational warfare conducted by Russian trolls under the command of Vladimir Putin?"
It is obvious now that the Kremlin pushes fake news and disinformation to influence American opinions. They have learned to game the social media system by using bots to push a high volume of content on Facebook or Twitter at a level which can be measurable as a trend. While the social media giants have been their most effective propaganda resource it has also been shown that they are actively feeding fake news and poisoning the discourse in many other public forums.
So the natural question would be: do Russian operatives pay attention to political discussion forums like those at C-D? Would they consider this a good place to either instigate fake news, or promote it? Not sure, but it would go a long way in explaining the constant regurgitation here of "alternative facts".

Opinions?
Can we as a country stop with the self righteous narrative that only Russia does things like this?
We do it to other countries.
We do it to ourselves, and not just to the opposition party.
You might be a snowflake..... but you ain't Snow White.
The idea that the US does it too is not a defense. Its one thing to interfere in a country where its leaders exterminates its own people, and another to interfere with a country because you think that democracy needs to fail.

This reminds me of the O'Reilly interview with Trump.
O'REILLY: "Putin's a killer."
TRUMP: "There are a lot of killers. Do you think we are so innocent?"
The idea that there is any kind of symmetry between what Putin does and the U.S., is hogwash. We don't have orchestrated programs to influence elections around the world. Russia does and is still doing it.

They've been doing that since at least the 1950's.
I remember perusing the university library in college, where there was a series of about ~100 books containing Soviet newspapers spanning from the 1950's to the 1980's. They are complete propaganda.
Did Putin & Co. step up their game and make this more sophisticated? Yes. The internet makes it easier to communicate with Americans. But this isn't a new game and they are not the only player.

You picked a really poor example here.
You're right, though, that "the idea that there is any kind of symmetry between what Putin does and the U.S., is hogwash."
