Donald Trump’s Multi-Pronged Attack on the Internet
By Susan Crawford

If there’s one thing that brings Americans together, it’s our hatred of the giant companies that sell us high-speed data services. Consumers routinely give Comcast, Charter (now Spectrum), Verizon, CenturyLink and AT&T basement-level scores for customer satisfaction. This collective resentment is fueled by the sense that we don’t have a choice when we sign up for their services...

It’s about to get worse: President Trump’s F.C.C., under the leadership of its fiercely deregulatory chairman, Ajit Pai, wants to let these companies become even more powerful by letting them do whatever they want and allowing them to merge with one another.

So people are haters because Trump gave the thumbs up to sell our internet browsing history?

Everybody in this country should be haters when it comes to this topic.

You agree to give google, twitter, instagram, facebook, and a hundred others your internet history, what is your problem with your internet provider having your internet history?

With sites moving to HTTPS in droves the information your ISP can gather is limited to the domain name at best. You can prevent that as well:

The 500 pound Gorilla in the room is the sites you use like Facebook and companies like Google that have their fingers into everything.

It's not that they are collecting this data which is something they need to do for more reasons than one. It's that they are selling it to other companies. If you want an analogy here it's like the phone company selling to advertisers who you called. Since most IP's hold a monopoly the consumer is left without much choice but use that service.

Just an FYI you can opt out of this which is really the crux of the issue, they switched it from opt in to opt out. In other words the Obama era regualtion would of required the consumer to opt in to having their data shared. Now they have to opt of having their data shared, inevitably this settiing will be buried somewhere in your ISP's control panel... <sigh>

The 1,000 pound gorillas in the room are the bozos in Washington who sanction this invasion of privacy.

You agree to allow many different entities to collect, and sell your browser history, has it been a problem for you so far, if not, why worry about this?

I can choose to not use or block a company like Google from collecting my data. It's very difficult to do that with an ISP.
