What do you all think of this idea ? I think it's a bad one not just because of the millions it will cost .

How and why are people having kids if they can't afford to open a $50 bank account for their kids ?

Besides the cost it sends a bad message that you can rely on the government to help you .

LOS ANGELES - Establishing a savings account program for kindergarteners in the Los Angeles Unified School District could cost between $2.7 million and $3.4 million annually, according a report approved today by a City Council committee.

The program is currently being explored by the City Council, and the report from the chief administrative officer outlined the cost and other factors to be considered if the city implements the idea.

$50 bank accounts for every LAUSD kindergartener? LA is thinking about it

Starting kids off at 5 years old teaching them to expect free money and bail outs from the government. Clearly a bad idea but definitely not surprising in LA

What measures are being put in place to make sure the parents can't raid the account? I couldn't find any reference to that.

Six in ten Americans don't have ten times that in savings.

Majority of Americans don't have $500 in savings - Jan. 12, 2017

More financial literacy is needed by a lot of people in this country.

So open a fund up and mentor a child. Using money stolen from your neighbors doesnt count.

Research shows that child savings accounts can help expand educational and economic opportunities for low- to moderate-income families and increase a youngster’s likelihood of attending college, according to the report.
And how does that work exactly? Does it amass into college fund amounts through osmosis? Does it help people living paycheck-to-paycheck when they can barely make ends meet and won't be able to add to these accounts?

The people who need this won't be able to add to the account and would likely use it for something they need now.

Those who don't need it are planning for college the day they bring their baby home.

These idiot politicians and their feel-good pipe dreams. And by pipe dream I mean they must be smoking something and then dreaming up this nonsense.

Look... the morons running the show here in CA are batsht crazy lunatics trying to hang on to their power. The easiest way is to become Santa Claus with OPM. Worked to get Obama a second term.

But, but, but... that's the only money they have to spend! It wouldn't be nearly as satisfying to use their own money on such things.

The original plan was $100 accounts for every student K-12 at a cost of $64 million, so this has already been scaled way back.

LAUSD may create college savings accounts for its 640,000 students | 89.3 KPCC

It won't do anything toward making more LA kids into scholars, but from a politicians point of view it must seem like a good plan, a legal way to give potential voters free money. And it almost seems reasonable compared to many of the education schemes that have been tried over the years.
