That said, coal ain't coming back. It's over.
And 19% more coal doesn't mean 19% more jobs. Someone posted a video here recently that coal has become efficient to the point that seven or eight men could level an entire mountain top.

What is going on here ? Are we being lied to again by the mean green jelly beans ?
What's going on?

1) India
2) China
2a) China cut back 2016 production to drive prices back up
2b) Improving economy means more demand
3) Natural gas prices ticked up a little

The coal cheerleaders shouldn't get too excited though. Increases are not particularly rare, they're just outdone by the deeper, more frequent declines. Heck, coal mining employment went up pretty dramatically for part of Obama's administration (+13000 from Jan 2010 to December 2011) - it actually hit a peak that had you'd have to back to 1997 to match.

If solar was up 19% this year, it would be touted as proof positive that the tide has turned and coal is doomed. So what happened? I thought coal's demise was a foregone conclusion and no policy can change that.
Hey, Santa needs all of that extra coal to put in the Republicans' Christmas stockings for coming up with a Death-dealing health plan!

Coal produces 41% of the electricity in the world including 30% f US energy production. Rumors of coal's death are greatly exaggerated.

I am for 'clean energy' and installed a solar panel system at my house but I think the switch to renewable energy should be done with natural market forces with some but limited government driving the move.

No, it's not exaggerated. Coal is dying.

Won't there be a lot of jobs burying it ?

Look how much that have taken out of the ground. That's going to be a big job covering it back up.

Seriously though no one really believes its going to reach past peak levels.

Ok, let's put things in perspective:

One single green car company is OUT-HIRING the ENTIRE Coal industry. The ENTIRE Coal industry!! And at over 3X the rate!!!!!!

Coal? The Entire Industry is Hiring Less than Tesla

The clean energy industry is blowing coal out of the water, and they are only going to get bigger, richer, and hire more. By all means, be a coal miner if that's what you want to do. But thinking coal is not in decline is wishful thinking.

The problem is that many on the left are rooting for coal to fail or have otherwise given up fighting for coal. Is coal the only way forward? Of course not. But coal doesn't have to die the quick, painful death that many leftists wish for. With a president like Donald Trump, at least there is someone in the White House fighting for coal miners vs. someone who would have otherwise worked to put a whole lot of "coal miners and coal companies out of business"

Maybe dying but will take several hundreds of years to die....we'll all be dead long before coal is dead.
