Why should he for crying out loud? Thank god it wasn't perceived to be a 'racist' remark (though I'm sure some have put forth that angle). John has been more than gracious in praising Serena, but the plain truth must hurt.

I believe a group of 14 year old boys defeated the women's national soccer team.

Oh, and if anyone asks, this is very much a politically oriented and controversial issue in general.

John McEnroe appeared on CBS This Morning Tuesday amid a controversy he created. During an NPR interview on June 25, the former No. 1 men’s tennis player in the world claimed that current tennis superstar Serena Williams would rank only 700th if she played on the men’s circuit.

Why is this even controversial? It's a fact that the top women tennis players could not compete with the men playing the game. Even now, women only play 2 out of 3 sets for most tournaments while men play 4 out of 5. Top men's tennis players are faster, stronger, and have more stamina than any of the women. It's just a fact of nature men and women are built differently.
The reason men and women don't play against each other professionally is because it wouldn't be competitive.

Serena wouldn't be in the top 10,000 men who are good tennis players....I wonder if she actually believes she could compete with men....surely not.

Serena should have her baby then play a man ranked 1-699 under the same rules to see what happens.

I doubt Serena cares what a temperamental retired tennis player thinks. I have no doubt there are several women tennis players that could beat McEnroe today.

The young Billie Jean King thoroughly trounced Bobby Riggs.

Pro tennis, like all pro sports that I'm aware of, is about strategy and smarts as much as it it about physical stamina.

Wrong. Again, Bobby Riggs was no longer playing professional tennis and was quite a bit older than Billie Jean. Even then, she struggled to beat him and she was ranked #1. Facts are facts. A professional man playing tennis today could easily beat a professional women. It's always been that way even though you may not like it.
Stamina plays an important role, but basic strength plays a huge role. Women can't serve as hard as men do nor hit the ball as hard in basic rallies.
