Samsung to Expand U.S. Operations, Open $380 Million Home Appliance Manufacturing Plant in South Carolina

Samsung reached an agreement with the State of South Carolina to open a state-of-the-art home appliance manufacturing plant in Newberry County. The $380M facility will produce some of Samsung’s most popular, industry-leading home appliances and will generate 954 local jobs by 2020.

Samsung confused over Trump’s ‘thank you’ tweet

Expressing bewilderment, Samsung officials in Seoul on Friday remained confused over a tweet by US President Donald Trump that praised the South Korean tech giant for considering building a stateside factory.

After news reports on Samsung’s plan to build a plant for home appliances in the US, Trump said in a Twitter message: “Thank you, @Samsung! We would love to have you!”

...
“We feel pressured for (President Trump) thanking Samsung because nothing has been decided yet, but it could give the wrong impression that Samsung may have done something (as he wished),” a Samsung official said.

Trump just said thank you - he did not take credit for a change.

It's still good news.

It's exciting to see the growth of the last 10 years continue in SC. So glad that Samsung found a site in SC to build a new plant.

I bet Waldo Kitty believes Trump keeps Charmin in business when he uses their toilet paper after taking his morning dump each day. Trump is not responsible for every job created, nor is he responsible for every job that is lost. He is not that important.

I wonder if Samsung will hire the other 3,000 workers Carrier is going to lay off. You remember Carrier, don't you?

Trump is still 2,000 jobs in the hole, even if Samsung follows through. And Samsung may well not follow through; the huge company went bankrupt years ago and has been under subsidy from the Korean government ever since. The only reason it hasn't been closed down is because it's so huge. Too big to fail, just like our banks. Samsung has the largest factory under one roof in the world.

Korea has already backed out of several Samsung buyout deals that have been offered. A big part of the problem is the Koreans don't want to sell off Samsung in pieces, and they make everything from guitars to cars under that big roof of theirs.

And since the North Koreans are rattling their sabers right now, South Korea would promise Trump the moon and stars if they think that was what it took to keep Trump on their side. Samsung may only be the chum they need to hook the whale.

When it comes to following through on some preliminary promise, the South Koreans can be mighty tight-fisted when it comes to handing over the big money. And mighty quick to pull it back and put it in their pocket.
