Trump supporters are, by and large, disaffected, uneducated, angry people for whom Trump serves as a cipher. They thrive on his nastiness since it serves as a cipher for their own powerless anger. He makes them feel powerful by association. The fact that he is a lying psychopath and disgusting human being--and has been his whole life (to which anyone who has been watching the Trump Show for the past 30 years will attest)--is therefore unimportant to them. They have no standards of decency, no expectations that the President of this great nation should be of unimpeachable character. They love his lies, they love his divisiveness in driving them to distrust their own government and other Americans. Every day he lies, and every day his supporters find ways to deflect. They're not interested in the truth; they are breathlessly devoted to looney web sites that claim the U.S. government is their enemy, that "liberals" are their enemy. That only Donald Trump tells the truth (despite the massive preponderance of evidence to the contrary), and that everyone else lies--everyone else: the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the French press, the German press, the Swedish press--all "liars," all engaged in some nefarious plot to take down America. Trump says "fake news," and they all fall right into line. He promises them everything, and can deliver nothing (primarily because he has no idea how government works, has no understanding of American history--he doesn't read--and is more concerned with holding ludicrous rallies where his sycophants cheer every stupid, empty thing he says). They are drunk on their alternative view of the world. The whole world sees Trump for the dangerous and ignorant and dishonest narcissist that he is, and is appalled that the U.S. could have elected this lunatic as POTUS. He has done more in 6 months to damage our international reputation that any President in history. But somehow, for his supporters, the whole world is wrong. I know many, many educated, happy people that voted for Trump because they wanted to see a change in direction of this country back to capitalism. Myself included. It was pretty much a vote for fiscal responsibility, and vote for jobs, and the economy.
