Trump formed an 'opioid abuse' committee and then apparently decided not to go along with any of their recommendations:

"Last week, the presidential opioid commission, chaired by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, urged Trump to “declare a national emergency” and noted that “America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks.” It recommended, among other things, expanding treatment facilities across the country, educating and equipping doctors about the proper way to prescribe pain medication, and equipping all police officers with the anti-overdose remedy Naloxone. Trump did not address any of the recommendations. Instead, the president repeated his well-worn pledge to be "very, very strong on our Southern border." "We're talking to China, where certain forms of man-made drug comes in and it is bad," Trump said. "We are speaking to other countries, and we're getting cooperation." Asked later why Trump didn't make the declaration, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said "all things are on the table."

After that I understood it too, and it surprised me. I smoked when I was really young and quit with no problem a few years later. I rarely drink and when I do it's a glass of wine or a beer. I've always been optimistic and never prone to depression but I guess I had some kind of specific vulnerability to opioids.

Exactly. Most don't need Opiods for pain. But hey, why not get them hooked so they will come back for more. My husband had toe surgery and got a prescription for 30 oxy with a refill. Are you kidding me

I was thinking in terms of campaign finance money, but what you've written is relevant, too.

Idiotic statement by trump. We can't just ban opiates because they have a legitimate medical use and most people never become addicted. Same as benzos. You cant force people to use things as intended. Considering heart disease is a top killer in the country we need to ban all food except kale and broccoli because people are just too addicted to greasy fattening tasty food.

Well, the 1980's and 90's had less drug problems than we're seeing right now lol

I think it's just that the drugs are so much worse. Meth is a completely different animal

Back in the 80s and 90s Fentanyl was not in common usage. Fentanyl is many times stronger than heroin.
