At this point it is not, they have treaties in place restricting their ability to form a standing military. They are restricted by WW2 treaties to basically only be allowed to maintain a small self defense force. So yea, we and other countries would have to do something in order to renegotiate said treaties.
Okay. Abolish the treaty, japans military is none of our business anyway.

The entire world has been marching down this road since the Trinity test in July 1945. Once we opened that Pandora's box, it was simply a matter of time before a rogue nation or terrorist organization started using those weapons to wield power and deliver destruction.
It amazes me that people really think that nuclear weapon proliferation can truly be contained. That is a fantasy. If it's not DPRK it will be someone else. Just a matter of time before those weapons are deployed somewhere, and then all bets are off.
Basically my take as well. Once the knowledge has been obtained it is impossible to roll back the clock.
The steady advance of technology means that, along with the first world pushing forward into unknown areas of science/knowledge, over time the second and third world get dragged along by proxy (technologically, they function on the first world's hand me downs).
That technological march will only make it easier to create nukes as time progresses. Combine that with what we know about human nature from history... a nuclear attack/war basically becomes inevitable at some point (just wait till I'm dead please, kthx).
I believe to arm the Japanese with our latest defense tech and nuclear weapons. Have them build a million man, highly trained army. Put the rising sun back on the radar of China.
Nuclear subs, aircraft carriers and a US trained Japanese Marine Corp with a renewal of their code of honor.
The absolute last thing the Chinese want. This would stir the pot in our favor and cost no US lives.
And the Japanese can easily afford it.
