there is no way to compare a country like Denmark with a major industrial country like America or large Europian countries. To even try is naive.
America is not a united country like Denmark. America is a loose confederation of bitterly divided nations: black vs white vs Hispanic, rural vs urban vs suburban, fundamentalist Christian vs liberal Christian vs Mormon vs Muslim vs secular.
Live for one year in San Francisco, one year in rural Mississippi, and one year in suburban Chicago. You'll quickly realize why we will (unfortunately) never become a civilized country like Denmark. Few Americans can stomach the possibility that their tax dollars might benefit "those people."

Problem is, Denmark is turning more into the US. Populist a-holes get elected on a platform that holds out a minority as a dangerous foreign element, and their scared constituents are eating it up with a spoon. It's embarrassing.
