Where is it working on a large scale?

Pretty sure you could make a strong argument that Ireland met '3rd world' criteria back in the potato famine days which sent over a lot of Irish lower class immigrants our way. This same old story about immigrants has been perpetuated since the 1800s.

NYC and its metro area is one of the most ethnically, racially, religious and culturally diverse places on the planet. Judging by the cost of housing and job market in NYC, TONs of people want to move there and still move there.

The Irish were poor but did not come from a civilization and historic tradition diametrically opposed to the values of the United States.

You absolutely cannot compare immigration factors, pressures and expectations in the 1800s to now. Our economy is vastly different, our welfare state is/was vastly different.

I think many open borders types are the same ones who would absolutely lose their minds if we announced a return to the conditions and expectations immigrants faced in the 1800s when they arrived on these shores (AKA, they were given NOTHING and told to go make a living or leave/die. Nobody cared otherwise).

Today, the interconnected media world reduces the pressure to assimilate and conform to one's new society. There was also the pressure to be part of the melting pot and to give up parts of your identity to become "American".... where today, such a notion is considered racist and "multiculturalism" is favored over the melting pot/assimilation model.

NYC has been bleeding its people for decades. Replaced ONLY by the immigrants who flock there from other parts of the world. Don't confuse moving somewhere "because that's where the money is" with moving somewhere BECAUSE you want to be part of that society and culture.

Look at all the westerners that go to Dubai to make money, with no intention on assimilating. Same thing is happening in the west. Only on a massive, historically unprecedented scale.

Agree with the OP.

All attempts in the past 150+ years to assimilate the blood-red states of the Deep South in America have failed. They continue to support violent policies against minorities and elect dangerous leaders. We probably should cut them loose.

You do know that it's no longer the 1800's and that culturally speaking, Ireland and say.......Syria for example, have about as much in common as a fish and a bicycle......

Right?

This is the this kind of nonsensical argument that Left uses....that since we accept "x" that we must therefore accept the entire alphabet.

They use it for everything from immigration to taxation.

That is to be expected, given the right-wing nature of this forum.

As for the racists around here, I wonder what nation their ancestors came from, and what would have happened if the bigots of their time had been successful in keeping them out?

Some historical perspective:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_Nothing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Peril

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Exclusion_Act

Racism is still alive and well in America, but it is particularly pathetic watching the people of today whine about immigrants when their own ancestors were once immigrants. Hypocrites.

I'm more worried about the unhinged white dudes with ideals supposedly in line with ours that have multiple high capacity guns or powerful explosives that kill hundreds of people. You know all those Dylan Roof, James Holmes, Stephen Paddock, Adam Lanza and Ted Kaczynski types.

Who was the Syrian arrested for the Christmas terror plot that was foiled in SF again?

Ironically most don't even realize that the more they cry wolf, the less people pay attention to them, which only serves to belittle and undermine the very cause they supposedly care so much about.

Take a breath once and a while. .....not everything is about racism.

Immigration is literally the backbone that made this country what it is. And to deny that very simple fact is to deny our history.

Shutting off this country to only a certain "select" people is about as un-American as it gets - and I'd argue anyone that wants to do such a thing doesn't really love this country.

It was much different, before the Welfare State was put in place. We didn't give a crap who came and goes. Once you start taking from one and give to others, the tables are much different. I become selfish of what was taken from me.

None of the above individuals hold ideals which are "in line with ours." Your attempt at sardonic,John-Stewart-esque wit falls flat because literally nobody has ever said that any of those individuals hold American ideals. In fact, their ideologies (if they even have one, or if they are known, which in at least two of the above we have no idea what they believed in if anything) are very much NOT in line with ours.

You also seem to be the kind of special person who doesn't know how to distinguish "race" vs. "ideology".... you literally can't help yourself. It's why all your analogies will fail, and why you will never be able to react to a problem.

If there was a country comprised of 2 billion people, all of whom were Nazis and subscribed to various Nazi beliefs with differing vigor or seriousness.... we would STILL be wary of importing a billion of them into our society becsuse, "gee, only 10% of them hold extreme Nazi views and the rest are marginally Nazi, or peaceful Nazis."

What you're either too dumb or naive to understand is that you can judge a belief system by its fruits. ALL Muslim-majority societies are basically garbage places to live if you're a minority of other kind. They have also produced less in the way of cultural products, innovations, inventions, science and social rights advancements than even middle-of-the road countries of the west.

THAT is what you hope to bring to the west because you have a hard-on for a Persian girl in a bikini.... forgetting that bikinis on beaches are not something you find in 99% of the Muslim world. ... and also forgetting Persian women are right now - as we sit here - fighting for their lives to end the Islamic regime's influence on their lives!
