They're taking advantage of our solar subsidies, subsidizing their manufacturing of the bulbs trying to dominate our market. Basically we can out subsidize(print money devalue our currency, dump said printed money into solar manufacturing) against you and gain a net win at the expense of your manufacturing jobs. We should have challenged them long ago on this. It's a net win for us anyway you cut it.

Agreed! It’s a warning shot at the Chinese ! They control 70% of the solar market in the world . This will most likely encourage investment here . Meanwhile whirlpool has been complaining for years about Chinese washing machines being imported . The import tax is temporary and will expire . So it will not have permanent consequences but may encourage investment here .

“This announcement caps nearly a decade of litigation and will result in new manufacturing jobs in Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee,” Whirlpool Chairman Jeff M. Fettig said in a statement

1.) I thought only Congress could impose tariffs. How was Trump able to do this all by himself?
2.) He's imposing it on imports here. Not on our exports or on making it here. How are jobs being lost HERE for it?
3.) China happens to be supporting Rocket Man in North Korea, so if we hurt their economy with this, maybe they'll do something about him.
4.) I thought you liberals all hated the Chinese stuff and whined about Chinese labor practices and offshoring to China. By doing this, he has made it more difficult for companies to offshore to China and then sell stuff here.

Why would anyone but China impose a tariff on us in retaliation for putting a tariff on Chinese stuff? Also, we have good reason to do this to China. In addition to them always stealing our stuff, they also happen to be funding Rocket Man.

The reason that these companies whine is because they are greedy corporatists. If they could make us all third world slaves working in horrible conditions just to make our sole purpose in existing to make them richer, they would.

Samsung is a South Korean Company, Kia/ Hyundai too.

Each has manufacturing plants in the US.

After this tariff, how many jobs will be lost in the US?

This whole protectionism thing is futile. It's been tried before--by Hoover.
While, again, I'd agree that protectionism used on a large scale like that would be a disaster, as Smoot Hawley proved, here, China is basically an enemy. They steal our intellectual property and are holding up Rocket Man's regime. It's a good international diplomatic move to start trying to destabalize their economy to force them to start acting.

I know. That said, if this plus other tariffs can cripple the Chinese economy, maybe they will get rid of Rocket Man and destroy his weapons before he uses them to wipe Seoul (which has millions and millions of people in it) or parts of CA (though sometimes we conservatives wish that would happen. ) off the map, it will be worth it long term.
