More than one million convicted felons in the swing state of Florida could receive the right to vote if a ballot measure amending Florida’s constitution passes this November.

A petition in support of the measure recently surpassed the 766,200 signatures needed to get it on the ballot. If passed, the measure would restore “the voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions after they complete all terms of their sentence including parole or probation.” It would not apply to those convicted of murder or sexual offenses.
Florida Could Let One Million Felons Vote | The Daily Caller

So illegals didn't work? You want to give felons their right to vote back?

Quote:
Left-wing blog Think Progress, which first reported that the petition had garnered enough signatures, noted that “research shows that people with criminal convictions tend to vote for Democratic candidates.”
Quote:
Currently, Florida citizens with criminal convictions who want to restore their voting rights have to apply for clemency with the governor. During his term, former Gov. Charlie Crist made it easier for former felons to regain their rights, restoring the right to vote to more than 155,000 felons. But current Gov. Rick Scott (R) reversed course in 2011 and mandated a waiting period before felons could even apply for clemency. Just a few thousand people have regained their voting rights since Scott took office in 2010.

The state’s strict disenfranchisement law dates back to the post-Civil War era when politicians were more overt about wanting to keep black residents from gaining political power. Since then, the law has been used to keep millions of Democratic-leaning voters from participating in the electoral process.
Not even trying to hide it anymore.

Quote:
While research shows that people with criminal convictions tend to vote for Democratic candidates... if Floridians with felony convictions were allowed to register to vote, an estimated 258,060 would register as Democrats, 46,920 as Republicans, and 84,456 as independent and third party. And nearly 60,000 additional ballots would have been cast.

You know me. I'm pretty damn conservative. But I have to agree here, with doing your time you paid your debt to society and once back out into society you get all your rights back, including the right to vote.
How else can you then participate in getting the law that placed you in jail, removed if it is a bad law.

As they say, you want to change a bad law? Keep enforcing it.

There was a reason murderers and thieves were hung by the neck.

I agree, they paid their debt, did their time, so are we going to penalize them forever ? In addition, what does voting have to do with committing a crime ? It is a stupid premise. What harm can it do to let them vote ? Should they also never be able to get a drivers license, or a marriage license ?

Glad to see my State is wising up a little. The OP is just scared because of that little line about them voting Democrat.

Felons who have completed their sentence should have all rights restored.

There is nothing in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that gives government the power to permanently strip free citizens of their rights.

Stop the presses! I agree with BentBow!

Once you serve your time, you’ve paid your debt to society as far as I’m concerned. I’ve always thought it ridiculous to prevent freed felons from voting.

BB, kudos on such a...well...progressive view on this issue.

Most felons I know tend to hate democrats and republicans alike and think the whole voting system is a joke. Think they both create stupid laws on purpose just so they can throw more people into the privatized prison system.

It isn't Progressive. Actually not restoring your rights is very progressive, with social engineering intent.
It is Constitutional. That is what we agree on.
Even armed men that spent time in jail for statutory crime, got their sidearms and long guns back, when released from custody, before the 1930's.
Murderers and thieves didn't make it out of jail alive.

Fair enough. We agree.
