Supposedly, even in 2014 the average cost of childcare for an infant at a daycare center in King County was $17,300. They can also charge what they want because they have a 24 month waiting list at some centers.
Looks like already without the full phase-in of the minimum wage increases in Washington that some parents are already complaining of $300 a month increases if they have two children.
Supposedly, the reason for the increases is the high minimum wages and state subsidies that pay far below the rate of market-rate paying parents which means that they have to increase the rates
Washington State is going to $13.50 minimum wage which of course covers child-care workers.
California will be at $15 plus all FICA taxes, UI taxes, Unemployment Training Fund Taxes, Workers Compensation taxes and also mandatory sick time which adds another 50 cents on for each hour.
Not to mention, health insurance costs.
They also hopefully have janitorial staffs and they will also have to increase the wage for them.
Looks like these parents with children in daycare have not seen anything yet as far as increases. It is also likely that daycares will have to offer more than the minimum wage because there will be other easier jobs that pay at the minimum wage.

Where do people think the extra money to pay these minimum wage increases comes from? The money fairy?
Think about it... if the amount of sales revenue remains the same, and all other business costs remain the same... and the amount of wages increase by 30% - where does a business owner come up with the extra money to pay for these wage increases?
They may choose to cut the number of employees so that the total cost of employment remains constant - which means people lose jobs. Or if the business allows it, they automate services to control costs - which means people lose jobs.
They may choose to raise the costs to the customer to bring in more money to pay the extra wages - and that's a risk because you may lose the customer. That's what this day care is doing.
There are consequences to government forcing these higher wages. People need to understand this.
Interesting but I wonder how much this is the tail wagging the dog.
Seattle and all of CA are already having severe problems with cost of living for normal skilled people in the 50-100K range. I interviewed with Amazon for such a job in Seattle. Thank goodness I failed.
It isn't a west coast issue, merely a high COL area issue. Have a boom in industry, it drives up COL just as bringing up minimum wage. Somehow Arizona voters freely signed off on a proposition to raise minimum wage over the next four years up to $12.00. Right now it is at $10.50 in year two.

This is tough for people that need day care but those people are doing a very critical job and should be compensated for it.

skyrocketing day care costs -- wow -- they must have been paying these people nothing.

I would rather pay more and get some decent care.
Are you assuming the care wasn’t decent until costs skyrocket?
