In what would be one of the biggest shakeups of the U.S. food-stamp program in its five-decade history, President Donald Trump is proposing to slash cash payments and substitute them with "100 percent American grown food" given to recipients.
The changes, outlined Monday in Trump’s budget proposal, would reshape the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which supports roughly one in eight Americans, by reducing cash spending by about one-third from current levels.
The plan is part of an effort to reform SNAP and save a projected $214 billion over a decade. It would give all households receiving more than $90 a month in cash a food-aid package that would "include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish," according to the proposal.
Hmm..depends on the details. For example-will it deal with dietary requirements? If so I don't have an issue with it. I might suggest some sort of phase in period, and that a certain % still be given to folks.
Somewhat torn on this. On the one hand, I wouldn't want the government telling me what to it, literally forcing me to eat whatever it is they send me.
Other hand, it might motivate me to get my act together to where I'm no longer on food stamps.
Could also have a positive impact on overall health care costs. Definitely a mixed bag here, but I'm all for some out of the box thinking because at least that can spawn other good ideas in the process.
Nothing says smaller govt. than the govt. telling people what they can eat
No one is telling anyone what they can eat. You're free to eat whatever, but if I'm going to be paying, then yes I get to have a say. I'm not buying poor people soda so they can fatten up and get diabetes, requiring yet another handout to fix their medical condition.

No they will most definitely tell them what they can eat -- the boxes will be pre packaged and be all 'shelf' stable products.
Really -- you want the govt. to now get into food distribution.....okay

When you give up responsibility you give up liberty.
