its more than just the cost of repairs, this is a national treasure of china, and this idiot committed an act of vandalism, and needs to be punished. would you say the same thing if this idiot had damaged say the mona lisa? we cannot go lightly on these idiots that think they can do what they want without consequence.

It’s a 2000 year old cultural work of art. If you can’t appreciate the significance I can’t help ya. The man needs some jail time. Someone steals Michangelo’s David finger he too should be put in jail. To the Chinese the warriors are equally important

Agree on the jail time. This wasn't a accident, this was intentional. And the only reason its even repairable is that he was caught. Otherwise he would have kept the thumb. IE he was stealing it.

Come on, this is just so stupid on his part. He deserves time for this.

I'd send the Terra cota thumb and the man's thumb to China with an apology.

If this happened in China (lucky for him it wasn't) I'm sure he would be going away for a long time.
Plus this incident wasn't on the street, but at a museum.

People need to learn respect for things they shouldn't be touching. The world does not revolve around you.

I saw this exhibit. It is mind-boggling. No two of these figures have the same face, they appear to be actual portraits of living individuals.

There he is, staring at you from 2000 years ago, and you are so moved that you - cut off his thumb????

It turns out that this particular figure was my favorite, his facial expression is beautiful and haunting.

For the first time in my life, I feel like writing a letter to the Chinese government and apologizing to them for the behavior of this stupid, stupid young man.

And I HATE the Chinese government.

Can we sell him to their prison system in exchange for a debt reduction? Would that be legal?

Like I always told my kids, keep your hands in your pockets if you can't keep them off of things that are not yours. This dude is a moron and deserves what he gets. Though we don't punish people like they do in China. Maybe we should start. Perhaps more people would keep their act together and not commit crimes. He probably never got his butt spanked as a child either.
