I was talking to one of my old friends yesterday and he was celebrating because he just got news that he won the "welfare lottery" by getting approved for some type of housing voucher where he only has to pay $300/month for rent and the rest is subsidized by the state government. Granted: only a smaller percentage of applicants get approved for this, and his parents hired an expensive lawyer who was probably able to pull some strings. Still, I think this is ridiculous. He's getting new a 2-bdrm apartment in an expensive PNW city, where a new 2-bdrm apartment is $2,500/month at the least. He's excited because this voucher, combined with his "Disability" check from the federal government, will be plenty to fund his casino and weed habits.
I work 60+ hours per week, don't drink, smoke or gamble, live in the same area, and can only afford a 1-bdrm apartment. How ridiculous is that?
And liberals want me to believe that "Welfare bums" is don't exist and I should support Bernie Sanders?
I think we know the same person. But it depends on the state you live in.
Another relative got disability due to on the job injuries. The insurance company for her employer followed her, took pictures and stopped the benefit.
Sure, we should be upset when anybody rips off the system. But it is the right, not the left, who pretends that only one side does it, and usually one group in particular (inner city brown people.)
Also, when is Trump going to get around to paying his taxes, and why are my tax dollars funding his vacations at his resorts?
It seems weird he would be approved for a 2 bedroom , is he living alone?
For real cases where one can’t work I can see why we would need subsidized housing . But there are a ton of people benefiting that don’t need it .
I also think rent control has gotten out of hand it’s become a big mess in L.A .
Ever notice how the cities with strong rent control are the most expensive , nyc , la , sf etc ?
The thing that people don't realize for every housing unit which is distorted from free market rents via housing vouchers and rent control is the lower the vacancy rate and higher the rent.
Some of the largest cities have hundreds of thousands of people living in subsidized apartments which keeps rents high for others.
If they were to immediately eliminate all housing subsidies and rent control, the rent for the remaining renters renting for artificially high rents due to scarcity would be more in-line with incomes of the people in the city.
Back in 2003, they built some SRO's in Denver. One was the old YMCA downtown. I was there for the summer and considering moving back to Denver and was 21 at the time.
They advertised in the weekly newspaper rent of $340 a month for a single-room occupancy. They required weekly room inspections to make sure it was clean. I visited and there were people who lived there cleaning to make sure the newly remodeled building was clean. It was in a great location with jobs nearby and for those who were disabled Denver Health was less than a mile and for less emergent matters the Stout Street Clinic.
It was a perfect model that they were starting back then where people who were down on their luck or those on disability could rent an affordable place and was taxpayer effective.
Seems like that they went away from that model though and the Colorado Coalition of the Homeless started building luxury housing that served far, far fewer people and many of them were paying much, much less to live in luxury.
Denver also closed lots of decent SRO's like the Standish for issues that would have been inexpensive to address and let Colorado Coalition for the Homeless build small amounts of luxury housing units for publicity purposes.
He's not physically disabled. He was diagnosed with a psychiatric condition during childhood.
He is disabled then....
I honestly don't understand why you are even outraged about a mentally disabled person acting the way some mentally disabled people do.
Note, I worked in housing (including senior and disabled public housing programs) for many years and a large percent of our residents were mentally disabled. They really do need the assistance in many cases and are not fully functioning individuals. So the person you are speaking of is not "able bodied."
Be glad you are not mentally disabled instead of being jealous about people with problems you probably can't even imagine (note addiction - both of drugs and gambling is an example of your friend/associate's mental disability - many mental conditions cause people to be highly susceptible to addiction)

He probably has an "aid" living with him, usually mentally disabled people have a family member or friend who assists them. That would allow him to get a 2bd unit.
Interesting . One thing of course land and building costs have skyrocketed in Denver and other cities since then . Just makes it harder to build affordable housing .
Plenty of affordable housing in America though .
The other thing is these housing developers are in bed with the politicians . A lot of money is made building “affordable” or “homeless” housing .

Very true in regards to the bold. People are also unaware that "affordable" housing communities are only deemed "affordable" for a specific amount of years (usually 10-25 years). After that time period, they are turned over into market rate units
Will note that I honestly believe that our President and his affiliated companies are greatly benefitting from him being president and him placing an amateur (Ben Carson) at the head of HUD. People are unaware of the fact that Trump's daddy got rich off of government housing programs and that he, himself also enriched himself via these programs/monies.
Housing is a very interesting field and I'm glad I worked in it. It touches every facet of communities in regards to HUD money being used to build communities and subsidize resident rents.
