Trump, through Sessions, is trying to exact punishment against a 21-year FBI veteran he knows will be a witness against him in a criminal case by trying to have him fired days before his pension vests—a decision that may cost McCabe untold hundreds of thousands or more.
More than that, this is Obstruction or Witness Tampering—as if McCabe is fired at Trump's direction (via Sessions) he's substantially weakened as a corroborating witness for Comey and against Trump at any future impeachment trial for Obstruction of Justice.
If the cause of firing is really the "lack of candor" and the IG report, why fire him few days before his retirement?
The only possible reason: weakening him in ongoing obstruction case. What other possible reason could they provide for ousting someone with less than a week to go in their career, beside "we want to send a message to anyone who's considering testifying against us"?

An individual's employment status has no bearing on their standing as a witness. If McCabe is as wronged as you say he will be, then he would certainly have an axe to grind and want to willingly be a witness.

The FBI was the one that recommended that McCabe be fired. This all comes from information that the DOJ Inspector General learned - he was asked to begin this investigation BEFORE President Trump was even sworn in. HOW Exactly is it President Trump's fault???

Why fire him a few days before his retirement??? Easy answer - McCabe is a criminal who abused his office. There is ZERO reason to allow him to profit from that abuse/criminality the way that Lois Lerner and so many other have.

The IG report essentially states he was unfair to Clinton. Which yeah, is not pretty. But do you really believe that Sessions is so mad at this, that he wants to fire him DAYS before his retirement?
If McMcabe is fired by Sessions because of direct or indirect influence from trump, he is de facto substantially weakened as a corroborating witness for Comey.
That's the whole game plan for trump in this. Trump's defense then can claim McCabe's testimony was biased/motivated by retribution for firing.
