A 34-year-old woman was fatally shot by police early Monday in northwest suburban Elgin.
About 12:34 a.m., officers made contact with a “suspicious vehicle” the woman was driving near Cedar Avenue, according to Elgin police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda. She then drove off.
After initially trying to pull over the vehicle over, officers called off their pursuit, Swoboda said. A short time later, the vehicle was seen driving west on Interstate 90 near Illinois Route 25 with “obvious damage.”
Officers then made contact with the driver, Decynthia S. Clements, who was armed with a knife, authorities said. After disengaging from the vehicle, officers negotiated with Clements for over an hour. During that time, she periodically moved her vehicle several feet.
She just had a knife, there were many cops there, they couldn't have easily just tasered or all bum rushed the small woman? What heroes.
Something happened after a small fire started in the vehicle and they pulled her out. More information should be released once this is investigated. Hopefully there were body cams or at least dash cams in use.

Tasers are not always effective and you have to get dangerously close to someone with a knife even to attempt to use it.
They could have easily overpowered her with a bum rush. And she could have easily stabbed one of them. No officer likes getting a festering gut wound during their shift and that is one of the better results. Even a nicked artery can cause a person can bleed out in a couple of minutes. A bladed weapon is a deadly weapon and the person holding it in an aggressive manner should be treated accordingly. Sex/gender/whatever of the aggressor should not factor into the equation.
Officers killing people is a statistical inevitability. Litigating every instance in the public sphere is dumb and anti-law enforcement. It'll never change, and we need cops. If you want to reduce your chances, don't do anything illegal. Though, that isn't a guarantee either.

This is exactly what so many of us are so outraged, disheartened by. While many others try to move heaven and earth to show that no one is ever, ever, ever, unjustly killed by a cop. No matter what the evidence is.
