It's little wonder Americans tend to get so easily hooked on junk foods and suffer much more from them in many ways than people in other developed countries.
It's not like Americans just genetically have less willpower than anyone else; they just get used and abused by companies more than anyone else.

If we didn't have corrupt representatives on the take and puppets of huge industries, we would not have this issue.
American palates are addicted to salt & sugar
I have a relative who drives for UBER Eats and I rode along with him one night.
14 deliveries and 9 were either McDonalds or some other fast food place....the rest were to upper scale restaurants & those deliveries were mostly to upper income areas.
As for the fast food?....most were to college kids.
The food regulations are obviously different, and it seems that the US allows the use of far more additives as well as salt and sugar.
Then again McDonalds and other chains sell different foods in different parts of the world, indeed some of the things sold in Asia are nothing like what is served by the same US Fast food chains in the US, and the same applies to some extent to other countries including the UK.
anyone stupid enough to say "when you look at the ingredients [in food], if you can’t spell it or pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t eat it' - as the 'food babe' does - should not be taken seriously.

Not to dismiss your point, but you should see pill prices in the US vs. elsewhere. That's where the REAL travesty is.
While I agree with the original article, some of its evidence doesn't make its case. If you read the article, it mentions how the ingredient list for the same product in the UK is different from that in the US. Is that problematic, sure!
But, the examples are:
Betty Crocker Cake Mix
McDonald's French Fries
Pizza Hut Garlic Bread
Pringles
Ritz Crackers
Starburst
None of these are anything we should be eating in the first place. It isn't like if I was eating these items in the UK I'd have a BMI of 17. Maybe, just maybe, that same person would be slightly less overweight in the UK due the ingredients. In most of those examples, sugar is the #1 or #2 ingredient. It sounds to me like the UK would have the same exact problem the US has.
I'm not doubting that sugar isn't addictive and bad for our health. Americans consume too much sugar and too much salt. We add it to everything - even things that don't really need it.
Why do we put corn syrup in a lot of things? We have a lot of corn. We are using our natural resource to feed our people. Is it a good solution? No, probably not. I'm not forgiving the food industry. They are doing whatever they can to make as much money as possible off of us before we die from a heart attack due to the bad food made available to us.
Do we have to eat it? No, but there's a price to pay, literally, in order to avoid it.
America sold its soul to the devil for the almighty dollar a long time ago, regarding the massive junk food in every grocery store and restaurant in America with the power the food industry holds.
Enjoy the ride folks. We will be an obese nation, and the health complications that come with it, for the foreseeable future.
