I will say that Comey publicly re-opening the email investigation gave fuel to the Trump campaign....not saying that was the difference but it might have been, who knows? So thank you Jim for that much.
Based in the IG Report and what you know about Comey's actions as FBI Director, should he have been fired as FBI Director
FBI Directors typically are not fired. He did botch the Hillary investigation. Obama may have had a better reason t let him go, but then again, why bother at that point? If Trump really had fired him for the Hillary investigation, I think it would have been different. Trump botched the firing more than Comey botch the Clinton investigation

Nope, Trump has the authority to fire the FBI Director for any reason or no reason and most so far agree he should have. Comey exceeded his authority by deciding not to prosecute Hillary (not his job), jumping in and reporting on the status of the email investigation after exonerating her illegal actions, leaking classified material to his friends, using his personal email for FBI business, taking classified work product home, and on and on.

J Edgar Hoover should have been fired. Nixon wanted to fire him at one point, but found out that Hoover had a file on him (Nixon) w/ info about Nixon's affair with a pretty married Chinese woman when Nixon worked as a young lawyer in Hong Kong. "Hoover's got files on everyone [expletive]," complained Nixon (paraphrase from memory, quote is from Ronald Kessler's book The Bureau

trump didnt botch the firing, the media made hay out of the fact that one o the reasons trump fired comey was his refusal to end the russian investigation.
comey was fired AFTER rosenstein recommended that he be fired for a variety of reasons. and the minute trump fired comey, rosenstein opened up the mueller investigation.

I believe Rosenstein recommended Comey's firing so he would have a pretense to start the Mueller witch hunt.
