AFAU US election laws, this is illegal, no?

How a One-Time Political Star in Mexico Ended Up Campaigning for Clinton

Or this - may not be illegal, but definitely trying to influence the election (yes, they try to say they are not trying to influence the elections but come on - imagine a Russian consulaate doing that).

Mar 23, 2016 5:07 am ET

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico is mounting an unprecedented effort to turn its permanent residents in the U.S. into citizens, a status that would enable them to vote -- presumably against Donald Trump.

Officially, Mexico says it respects U.S. sovereignty and has no strategy to influence the result of the presidential race. Yet Mexican diplomats are mobilizing for the first time to assist immigrants in gaining U.S. citizenship, hosting free workshops on naturalization.

"This is a historic moment where the Mexican consulate will open its doors to carry out these types of events in favor of the Mexican community," Adrian Sosa, a spokesman for the consulate in Chicago, said before an event on March 19. In Dallas, about 250 permanent residents attended the consulate’s first "citizenship clinic" in February and another 150 in its second in March. In Las Vegas, the turnout topped 500.

... and Carlos Slim - the Mexican "oligarch" - was the largest shareholder of New York Times during the 2016 elections. No influence though at all, right?

Another example: https://www.billboard.com/articles/c...ower-tour-vote

Mexican band (not US residents or US citizens) touring the US urging Mexicans to vote against Trump before the 2016 elections.

Is that "meddling in the US elections"?

Isn't it only meddling if it is done by hacking into computer systems etc.

And I'm pretty sure it is illegal even for American voters to hack into the voting machines.

It's as "illegal" as it is "illegal" for foreigners to disseminate election-related information on the Internet. In fact, direct campaigning for a candidate is a bit more blatant, wouldn't you say?

But the Russians weren't charged with infiltrating the internet. They were charged with hacking into the voting machines -- the computers -- which is illegal.

Does that help?
