Many people do not realize how protectionist other countries are, how they manipulate their currencies, fund their state controlled oil companies, pay slave wages, steal intellectual properties that take our companies years and billions of dollars in R&D to come to market, etc., etc., etc.

Thank goodness Trump is finally doing something about it!

I swear some of you have barely a high school level grasp of economics.

Trade wars and or tariffs *never* have worked out well on average for their intended purposes. All tariffs do is drive up prices to consumers and create protected markets who soon become captive and or otherwise cannot exist without.

Real danger with tariffs comes from something anyone involved with marketing, sales and or whatever knows. The target of said rates may simply find a substitute for whatever is being taxed and never return even after the tariff is lifted.

As soon as the Republicans took power under Trump they jettisoned every platform they supported without even a figleaf of an excuse. Absolutely pathetic.

Title should read "Trump steals 12 billion of our tax dollars to pay for problems created by his ego"

That is the real risk. When Trump took the U.S. out of the TPP, Japan started working with China again. Mexico and Canada joined the TPP. The U.S. was left out and that was a huge market for the U.S. to lose. Then Trump went after Canada and Mexico. Mexico is one of if not the largest U.S. dairy customer something like 1-2 billion annually. Mexico started talking to New Zealand about replacing the U.S. as a dairy resource.
Trump is doing this with all our trading partners and they are finding ways to do without the U.S. Once all this is over, which could be a long time, we may not have the same trade strength again. Look how long it took for our farmers to build the trade partners they have today and look how fast they are losing them.

This is such a foolish thing for Trump and his supporters to do, they deserve what happens.

Wait, wait, let me get this straight...Trump starts a trade war, as a result of his action, farmers are starting to feel it and are suffering, so he proposes $12 billion in tax dollars to prop up the farmers that he hurt in the first place by starting the trade war?! He will also have to subsidize the steel and auto industry, clothing, and many others. Guess he flunked Econ 101. Nobody wins with tariffs and trade wars.

Trump could p*ss on your leg and tell it’s raining and you would still believe him.

Oh wait, that’s exactly what he’s doing!

Actually TPP would have pretty much eliminated tariffs between the member countries. It doesnt get more level than that. Now we are taxing the living crap out of the US consumers, and that is supposed to be a great thing, except that we are already bailing out failing businesses.

I agree with the GOP Senator who said Trump is creating a Soviet style economy in US. It is bizarre so see his supporters shriek in joy seeing it come to fruition.

That was after Trump, the Stable Genius, declared the TPP was "designed for China to come in, as they always do, through the back door and totally take advantage of everyone."

Nope, they strolled in the front door after the idiot had to go and wreck yet another foreign policy initiative.

And since he pulled us out of the TPP, other countries are filling the void in the world. We're pretty isolated now. We all may be suffering for quite a while as we lose trading partners who have other sources now. So much winning it hurts! It used to be that Republicans were dead against tariffs.
