May 8th is celebrated throughout Europe to commemorate the victory of the Allies over the Nazis. This was a monumental event in world history, yet very few Americans are even aware of the date.
There are nations in Europe which have this date as national holidays.
Why no recognition of this event in the US? More people know about the significance of November 11th or September 11th than May 8th. Why no love for defeating the Nazis- the second greatest threat to America next to liberalism.

Interesting question, because almost every American I've ever spoken to loves to tell me how America saved our "asses"

On VE day, we weren't done yet. We were still dealing with warring with Japan, and hadn't dropped the atom bombs that ended the war.
The end of war in Europe wasn't our occasion to celebrate.
It seems anti-climactic to celebrate "we're nearly done" by commemorating VE day, and no one wants to celebrate the dropping of the bombs because although necessary, it was horrid and gruesome.
Most Americans dont even know the purpose of Memorial Day or Independence Day, or cannot (or don't care to know) tell who were a few key figures in the Revolutionary War. As a historian, this is all very atypical for most of American history. Our ancestors were very invested in holidays, celebrated their heritage...
I wouldn't be surprised if there were more people that know what Kim Kerdashian had for breakfast than what VE and VJ day is about. Those days might as well be ancient History.
The Left certainly does not want to remind the masses that at one time we all came together to work hard, where everyone at home and abroad made unselfish sacrifices in order to beat down tyranny to emerge as a truly United States and a real Power on the World stage.
That kind of talk is MAGA speak that resounds the naughty words of Freedom, Patriotism and Love for Country.
The Left is trying hard to squash all that and celebrating VE day would remind us that at one time we were united.

Many people aren't aware of it for reasons expressed by others. American society isn't what it once was. Personally I would like to acknowledge and respect the sacrifices made for helping to bring down one of the most evil regimes in human history along with the fascist holdout in northern Italy. When it comes to the Soviet Union we should respect the profound sacrifices they made to grind the German war machine down which was like 2 to 1 in comparison to the Allies though we shouldn't be remiss in acknowledging how the Soviets were a co-belligerent of the Germans for the first two years of the war and how they even invaded Poland in conjunction with the Germans back in 1939.
