The dumbing down of the human race is in progress.
That’s what I think. It’s not just the black students as asserted above. Some of the smartest people I know come from Africa. They’re well educated and multi-lingual. Far better educated than most people educated in the United States. This is just social media infecting young people all over the world.
All you have to do is write “all reality is nothing more than an illusory social construct, including this test, therefore I will not waste time dealing with this socially constructed illusion.”
I am assuming nothing. Again, why would you think that when you know the article does not contain everything the students said to the professors. Your claims are based on your biases.
It is those in this thread including you making all the assumptions - you can''t see that? I offered you an out in this thread before, and I will again. You seem - as you claimed I did - to want to go on and on. I think you are wrong - and wrong headed and I will leave it at that.
First of all, I didn't enter the discussion until you made a ridiculous statement about philosophy classes.
Secondly, in any of the threads on c-d, all we can go on is what we're reading about a given topic. To suggest other factors may be at play in a general way, is fair game. To rewrite the reasons the students walked out from 'it was too hard' to everything else you threw into the mix, is an attempt to change the story.

Yeah really it's pretty subjective course work and usually the tests are subjective. It's not like a chemistry or math test which can be quite hard and focused.
But there you go, back to western philosophy. What makes it so superior that it should be the only - or primary philosophy taught? BTW, isn't Western Philosophy - by definition - foreign to Africans? Wouldn't it be foreign to easterners?
FYI - Greek philosophers actually studied philosophy in Africa (especially in Egypt). That part is the only thing IMO that is a negative on the way philosophy is taught - that history is skewed to where people believe it started with the Greeks when it did not. Plato himself spent over a decade studying in Africa and so did Aristotle.
Philosophy is the study of life and thought. IMO it actually isn't hard. Not sure what these kids are complaining about. I took philosophy and ethics in college. It was a great introductory course on the subjects and maybe because I attended an HBCU we were taught about the fact that Greek philosphers actually studied and acquired knowledge from Africans.
However, I'll note in general on the OP that it is odd that this was posted here and not in an education forum or something else. Not really getting the reason behind the post except to try to paint all black people and especially South Africans as not wanting to learn on a high level. That is actually not the case to any wide degree.
The course description and class syllabus explain what the class entails.
If you start the class and see it's not for you - you have the option of dropping the class.
I read some Twitter posts about this and evidently some of the students indicated that the queries on the test were not covered by the syllabus or the lectures in class.
But even with that, I don't see a need to walk out.
I think there is more though than is being reported in the media about this.

Its certainly true that the South African education system is producing terrible results and the ruling ANC have no incentives to improve it. Why would they? A highly educated population is a threat.
