An overreaction to be certain, but if closing the borders to protect us the nation from a perceived threat does not lie within the purview of the President of the United States' power, then that's completely insane. That is exactly the kind of power that the Constitution intentionally and explicitly vested in the President. Whether Trump misuses said power or not, it's a power that he does indeed have. How else could any given Commander in Chief be expected to defend the nation against an actual surprise military invasion?
Well clearly he is only going to close it to the legal crossing of people and goods, which will only create hardships, business losses, job losses, and harm the US economy. Illegals crossing will be unaffected.
I'm betting he's playing a game of high stakes chicken here. We'll see how it plays out. It is quite overwhelmingly in Mexico's best interest to make the caravan problem go away ASAP because I think we all know that Trump's crazy enough to actually do it. Likely, that's exactly the game he's playing here.

They have every right to ask about citizenship status. They might have problems if they profiled in doing so and might be required to ask everyone or no one but there are no court orders blocking police from asking about citizenship, just policies in sanctuary cities and states protecting illegals.

Which state or local statute make being a non citizen a basis for a crime?
How about they ask you if you screw dogs? Or like to pull the wings off butterflies? At least the first might be a crime...maybe even the second. But being a non citizen? Even whether a non citizen is legal or not is beyond the ken of most police officers.
And it is well settled law that you need answer nothing unless the officer has an articulable suspicion of a crime. And even then you need state only your name.

Btw, I'm not talking about approaching a group of brown people and asking about their status but asking about it during traffic stops, accidents, or other incidents predicated by probable cause of a local crime.

The US Army made that projection and it still may be true. There has been a gathering of all the loose ends in Mexico due to the publicity of this caravan by Trump.
So in this case the end may be driven by Trump not the Central Americans
