I do think he’s overcompensating. He and John got along well, probably in part because McCain didn’t care whether he was gay or not. The Pences of the party on the other hand, not to mention his evangelical base in SC, would. Trump doesn’t care either, and when they golfed together The Donald probably told him he’d make him the next AG if he walked back on his previous promise to cause an uproar should Sessions be fired.
