Because Trump was the issue in 2018. Republicans won every CD that Trump won by 5% or more. They lost almost all of the CD’s that were carried by Clinton in 2016 or won by Trump by less than 5%. Trump was the issue because he nationalized the election. That helped Republicans win the Senate but it lost them the House because it lost those key suburbs. That was primarily a referendum on Donald Trump.

You also ignored the key sentence in my post. “If” Trump loses those key suburbs in 2020 he will lose reelection. I stand by that statement.

Here’s a tweet from David Wasserman of Cook Political Report that illustrates Trump’s effect on the types of seats the Republicans retained and those they lost in 2018.

”Republicans are on track to hold 191/199 (96%) of the districts Trump carried by 7% or more in 2016. Democrats are on track to hold 226/236 (96%) of the others.”

simple. After losing 2014 and 2016 and being the minority party in all branches of government the Democrats were motivated and well funded. It's a boxing fight. Democrats won this round and now the Republicans will counter and having Pelosi as Speaker of the Hosue, well you know the game plan.
