I can't believe there cannot be a few days without the political vitriol during the year. Why can't you stop, give thanks for what we have, enjoy breaking bread and have a moment of national brotherhood.

Is that too much to ask?
there is so much to be thankful for this thanksgiving: our loved ones, prosperity, safety, health, opportunity. America is the most amazing country in the world. I feel so, so lucky to be born in this unique country and our children feel the same.

Heck, the German, British, and American soldiers managed to engage in an unofficial Christmas Truce in 1914. Soldiers literally left their firearms in the trenches and entered the so-called "No Man's Land" in between where they pronounced Merry Christmas in the native tongue of their respective enemies, sang carols, exchanged gifts of cigarettes and pudding, and in at least one instance, played a friendly game of soccer. I've always thought of this as one of the most powerful moments in comparatively modern history for a variety of reasons. If these men could find a few hours-worth of peace amidst a field of corpses, then surely today everyone can at least replace the 'hairy eye' with a friendly waive upon seeing their neighbors.
With that being said, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and their families.
I had Thanksgiving dinner with a family with a person who is politically the oppose of me and is also known for telling crude, racist and sexist jokes. I wasn't looking forward to going but he surprised everyone and not a single political topic was brought up by anyone and he left his jokes at home. Very nice afternoon.

I can't say America is the most amazing country in the world right now. The America we live in is not the America I love and respect. It is taking quite a few steps back in the past three years.
Trump did not stop for today. He spent his Thanksgiving day attacking the justice system in our country - something that we should be thankful is one of the great strengths of our nation.

Does a "Thanks" thread fall under politics, or controversies? I'm confused as to why you would have expected such a thread to be here.
My local radio station had a multi-hour reading by Michael Medved about the Pilgrims and Puritans. As a kid who hated history I had no idea those were two different groups. I didn't know that the Puritans weren't as puritanical as I thought either! So I learned something right there and was grateful. Pilgrims coming to the new world would be like going to Mars today. Brave folks.
Meanwhile, I made delicious pumpkin walnut chocolate cake!
