Six-year-old James is caught in a gender identity nightmare. Under his mom’s care in Dallas, Texas, James obediently lives as a trans girl named “Luna.” But given the choice when he’s with dad, he’s all boy — his sex at birth.
In their divorce proceedings, the mother has charged the father with child abuse for not affirming James as transgender, has sought restraining orders against him, and is seeking to terminate his parental rights. She is also seeking to require him to pay for the child’s visits to a transgender-affirming therapist and transgender medical alterations, which may include hormonal sterilization starting at age eight.
If all this is true, than this boy needs to be rescued before this crazy mother has him permanently mutilated. if I was the father, I'd probably take unauthorized custody, head for distant places and hope for success. No transgender action should ever be allowed to be imposed on a minor. That's a decision that should be made only by the person to which it happens and only after adulthood is reached.
My solution would be for the judge to take the boy into his chambers and in front of the attorneys for both parents ask him if he is a boy or a girl. Not, "does mom say you are a girl" or "does dad say you are a boy", but what James says he is.
Of course, an evaluation by an independent doctor who treats transgender children is indicated.
By the way, the treatment to delay puberty in children who are transgender does not "sterilize" them.

No surgery is offered to a transgender person until s/he is old enough to consent.
Meh. Divorces are ugly and nasty, and full of people who lie. Judge will get the kid a legal counsel, and some folks to look out for his or her best interests. And right now we have no idea what those are, but lots of you will assume one way or another.
Divorces get nasty sometimes.
