Americans don't want American cars. It's highly unlikely that the Chinese do. Also, they are moving very quickly toward certain percentages of Electric Vehicles and higher efficiency standards. The US just rolled back the standards.

Lots of "American" cars like Buick.....being made in China. Even with zero tariffs (the way it should be), it wouldn't pay for us to make cars here and ship them there...given their production capabilities, labor force and lower costs.
That was my thought.
What difference would lowering the tariff rate make? They could eliminate it altogether and American manufactured cars still couldn't compete with cars manufactured in China.

Will a reduced tariff increase sales of US made cars to China? Who knows? It can’t hurt.
China is the largest market for cars/ trucks in the world. No shortage of foreign brands manufacture cars in China including but not limited to GM, Ford,Audi, Toyota, Buick,Honda and VW. They do so to avoid tariffs and shipping costs which allows them to better compete with Chinese brands.
A reduction of tariff to 15% and shipping costs still places a US manufactured care at a disadvantage to one made in China.
Ford Motor opened its first offshore plant nearly 100 years ago in the UK, for the same reason that auto manufacturers do in China, today.
VW dominates the Chinese market. Perhaps some of these profits help fund the pensions of their employees in Europe.

American auto manufacturers already jumped ship to China so how will this improve anything.
Ideally, banning American Corporations from jumping ship to foriegn countries would have a bigger impact if the idea is to create more jobs here.

Ford is the only company that really has large foreign sales, with GM even sellimg it's European Operation and Chrysler now just a subsidiary of Fiat.
It's quite sad, but other countries have also seen their car industries displaced by foreign manufacturers so the US is not alone.
In terms of Ford it still has operations in the UK, but nothing like in it's heyday when giant plants such as Ford Dagenham near London used to employ over 50,000 people on one site.

It's a bone from China to trump. The Chinese have a 15% tariff on all foreign import cars....so now the US is treated like all other foreigners. No special treatment though and hardly a win for trump. But I bet he will tout it like he just won the mvp for the NBA championship.

Trump has told foreign car manufacturers to build their cars here to avoid tariffs and some are taking his advice. They wouldn't even have to build a factory since they could use some of the GM ones that are due to close. Just tailor them for their specific car. Jobs for American workers, too.
By the way, have the Chinese been buying Teslas?
He's building a vast plant and battery factory there as you must know. Chinese manufacturing for Chinese market.
