The drug was developed over 30 years ago in Europe and has been freely available for years. But now a drug maker has an exclusive license to it and will be charging around $375,000 a year per person for it. As solid an argument as any that medical research should be conducted at universities or hospitals with public funding and drugs manufactured strictly by non-profits at cost. Profits kill people when it comes to healthcare.
It was just approved by the FDA in November. “Until now, patients have been able to access an unapproved version of this drug for free through the FDA compassionate use program.”

There was a small drug company making it available freely since the 90's in the U.S. (it was available earlier in parts of Europe). A different company applied for and got an exclusive license to make their named version of it and will now charge an absurdly high price for it. Greed should have no place in the medical field.

Titanic sailed for a profit motive, but I suspect even you would flinch at the idea of White Star auctioning off seats in lifeboats to the highest bidder. Although perhaps not.
