….said the Pope …. from his walled city, behind his armed guards, from within the wealthiest 'religion' on the planet, with tax exempt status...…
and I say this as a former Catholic.
Not saying he's not right about materialism, but he doesn't have much room to talk.
When I visited the Vatican many years ago, I loved the architecture, history and spiritual atmosphere (I love going to the world's great cathedrals) but found the display of wealth distasteful. The gifts from foreign governments were very lavish. Except President Nixon -- gave a ceramic bird, as I recall. Well, he was a Quaker, wasn't he?
The main problem with the Catholic Church has always been corruption. I am allowed to say this as a former Catholic, like blacks are allowed to say the N Word. Prophecy said this was the last Pope, I believe, which is a good thing.
Just meditate and get a direct experience of God without intermediaries. I watched the Scorcese documentary about George Harrison, Living in the Material World, and Olivia Harrison described the moment George left his body. He lit up the entire hospital room! That is a good death which you prepare for by meditating.
What do you even mean by this? Do you know anything?
I wonder that too. He is consistently praising the 1% er's and the Republican Party, the ones who have gamed the system so billionaires pay less in taxes than ever before and the working class toil for low wages and unaffordable medical insurance.
While I may not be a deeply religious person, I have to say there are many things about the current Pope that I like/agree with.
My father is a very deeply religious.... this topic touches one of many reasons, in his later years, he no longer identifies with the church he grew up in, Roman Catholic, and worships quietly at home on his own.
The amount of materialism in the city is off the chart!!!
I've seen it...a bunch of old stuff, so that doesn't count. No Apple MacbookPro's, Xbox's, 70" flat screens, or even Ferrari's. Heck, it's Italy, shouldn't the Pope have a White Ferrari or Lambo Adventador? he doesnt even wear Bruno Magli shoes.

I couldn't agree with him more. Shame on the money worshipers, and the worshipers of material satisfaction. I would be happy to sacrifice some of the excess, if it meant underclasses both here and abroad could enjoy consistent meals, basic health care, and the opportunity to work and contribute. These things are far more important than cheap, easily breakable crap that people throw their money away on today.
Consumerism and materialism are one way roads to hell. Our broken society, broken homes, ever rising homelessness, drug addicted culture reflects this. We've forgotten what truly important in life.
With the latest round of molestation cover ups in Illinois I think the pope should be more penitent instead of accusatory. The church is due for another Martin Luther moment if you ask me....it’s infested.
