Just checked this - the term "Hottentot" is Dutch, apparently dating back to the 1600s. It was first used by Afrikaaners (South African residents of Dutch origin) in reference to the Khaikhai people who were native to the area. It is considered derogatory now. There are some interesting accounts of the Khaikhais online - many quite sad.

I don't recall this term being used in the 1965 movie, and I don't remember it from the book, though it well may be there. Or perhaps was there prior to the revision of the problematic chapter - actually, that should be "replacement", not "revision".

Sometimes it seems like the the P.C. crowd just randomly picks a movie, book, song, artwork, etc. to figure out how they can apply the racist or sexist card to that work.

I just watched an episode of Bewitched where they all wore blackface. And there's the one where they had a white guy supposed to be Japanese. They got away with some really questionable shows back then.

How about Shirley Temple? She wore blackface in "The Littlest Rebel". She also took successful aim at Eleanor Roosevelt's derriere with her slingshot, one of her favorite toys.

Of course, Shirley Temple (Black) also grew up to be a very prominent Republican!

There are plenty of example from days gone by but this is a stretch alleging that chimney sweeps coming out of chimneys are doing a black face and making this accusations 50 years later. Hell 50 years ago the racial hatred in the south was running rampant along with the klan and this is what they come up with....

reparations are being paid through erasure of our history and using the false template held sacred today by social justice contingent against past behavior no matter how far back and of course without perspective and context. This assures any politician from this day forward must first look at his high school yearbook.

Wonder why the VA dustup does not go after the editor of the yearbook??????????

Dem senator Byrd cannot be explained given the low threshold for destroying a person's life by social justice advocates and democrats.

Welcome to the witch trials, bought to you by the hate and fear mongering hijacked democrat party along with its media propaganda machine.

There are many old movies that I watch and shudder at the obvious racism in them. (Has anyone seen "Holiday Inn" with Bing Crosby, for example?*)

However, "Mary Poppins" is definitely NOT one of those movies.

Dick van Dyke's accent was the equivalent of black face to Cockneys, I'm thinking.
