Deficits have soared under President Trump, spurned on by the GOP tax law, bipartisan spending increases, and the forward momentum of mandatory spending programs such as Medicare and Social Security. Tuesday’s estimate put the total outstanding public debt at $22.013 trillion,

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected that annual deficits would surpass $1 trillion a year starting in 2020 assuming current spending and revenue policies remain in place.

Strangely enough, Republicans USED to care about this

The last Republican President to care about government spending and debt was Coolidge.

Trump is just following in the footsteps of Reagan, both Bushes, and Obama.

Should Trump shutdown the government for Congress to help him lower the debt? Congress makes the budgets, right?

Ultimately it's the people's responsibility to put people in office who want to lower the debt. It's not happening because most of us operate our lives in our own debt. So it's obviously not a big deal... at least not today. We will hit a financial brick wall first before people wake up.

Actually, the INTEREST RATES are best at raising the national debt. Until the parties can agree to making cuts in government spending, the interest rate alone will continue to multiply the debt at a rate that we cannot overcome. Same will be true of the next president and the one to follow.

If you want to blame folks (which, by the way, they blamed Obama, Bush, and Clinton too) blame yourself for choosing a party line and refusing to work with the other side to accomplish legislation that is good for the country. You and the rest of Americans who have "chosen sides" and refuse to talk to the other side are what's driving up the National Debt.

Republicans dont seem to care about anything except the wall and hating Democrats.

I honestly don't know what the Republican Party is supposed to represent anymore.

Borrowing down, Fed reigning in the money supply. All signs of a great economy.

Yeah, Republicans used to be so good at going on and on about how horrible it was for the children and grandchildren being saddled with the rising national debt. But now, nothing but crickets. I guess the children and grandchildren don't matter much any more.
