More states join push to elect president based on popular vote
NASHVILLE (WZTV) - Colorado is the latest state to pass a bill which would change the way presidential candidates win office.
The state joins 11 others after passing a bill to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Under the compact, the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationwide would be be awarded the electoral college votes from participating states, even if the candidate lost in that state.
In order for the bills in states which have passed laws recognizing the agreement, a total of 270 electoral votes from participating states is needed.

I don't agree with awarding electoral votes to a candidate who loses the popular vote in a state but I certainly believe electoral votes should be awarded proportionally by popular vote and not winner take all as it is in 48 states.

We can expect the GOP to fight this tooth and nail. They haven't won the popular vote since 2004.
These are a couple good, well articulated videos that explain why popular vote (and for that reason, a direct democracy) is not suited for American interests, and why the current electoral college system is important.
They will NEVER get enough states to change the Constitution!

you are going to need them AGAIN!
Agreed- It is a liberal fantasy in which they dream about gaining absolute power. Fortunately, they would need the consent of the states that would be marginalized by such a vote, so it will never happen.

You nailed it. That is precisely what this is all about, and it is scary stuff, IMO.

Then they should be labeled the anti-democracy party they are and be called out on it, especially when they start trying to sell the BS that it's a noble thing to fight to bring democracy to other countries like they did with the Iraq invasion.
