We all know who Margaret Thatcher is, the infamous Iron Lady. While browsing IMDB I came upon an interesting quote from Honor Blackman who played the bond girl from the movie Goldfinger:

Quote:
[on former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher following her death in 2013] She was a powerful figure, but she did damn all for empowering women. She didn't surround herself with any women whatsoever or encourage women to come into politics or do anything in particular. She could have been a quite wonderful role model.
Do you think Margaret Thatcher was in the wrong not to use her position to try to empower women?

Sure. Then again, she could have been empowering women all along. She was in politics decades before she became prime minister.

No, it is not her responsibility to try to empower other women. It is her responsibility to serve her country and she did a wonderful job.

How can you ask American women what a British politician did or didn't do? Honor Blackman was British. I'm sure she followed British politics. Any responses you'll get here from American women is more than likely nothing but conjecture.

Could have been?? She became the leader of her country and one of the most prominent politicians in the world. She could not possibly have been more of a role model for empowered women. She's being criticized here for not being a feminist, and trying to use her power to promote women, which is a different thing from being a role model.

I don’t know. This is a matter for the British people to ruminate over. Americans haven’t a clue.

Like I said, Americans haven’t a clue. That is speaking for myself. Who else did you think I was speaking for?

I detested Margaret Thatcher and disagreed with probably 80% of what she did while in power.
But it wasn't her job to empower women, it was her job to be the Prime Minister. She didn't get the job because she was a woman. She got the job because she was a capable leader and could wipe the floor with most of the men around her.

She was only an example to women in that her role showed what was possible for women to achieve.
