Directly from the story:
As early as the 1960s, some students argued the mural’s imagery is offensive and racist. Renewed opposition emerged in recent years amid protests in the South and elsewhere over statues honoring Confederate heroes.

Arnautoff, a Russian-born communist and social critic, was hired with Federal Art Project funds as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, a series of government programs meant to help lift the country out of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Arnautoff is one of the artists who painted the murals at Coit Tower, one of my favorite places in San Francisco.

Politics makes strange bedfellows. I am making an educated guess that most of the posters in this thread who are critiquing the San Francisco School Board's decision to remove the mural are conservative or lean right.

They are supporting a mural by a commie artist while liberal San Francisco wants to cover up his art!!!

I am moderately to the left and I think the school board's decision is NUTS. This is PC liberalism run amok (yet again)!
Which was commissioned by FDR during the progressive movement.

And sure that journalist can easily say people were offended for years and years but provided NO PROOF.

LOL!!! The irony completely escapes you didn't it??? A right-winger crying out that, "It's only art, for gods' sake!"

Why don't you tell it to the right-wing conservatives from Reagan to Jesse Helms to Trump who riled against art as an expression of liberal ideology for the last four decades??!!!!

Behind the right’s loathing of the National Endowment for the Arts

The conservative Jesse Helms art world culture wars are over: How Mapplethorpe won.

Now, if it the art piece is displayed in a museum, I think the standard would be different from one displayed in a school.

If anyone is a traitor its the current inhabitant of the WH, who offered our intelligence secrets to Russian officials in the oval office, invited Russia to commit cyber espionage on a rival campaign, and repeatedly sided with Putin over our own intelligence agencies.

No, it's not.

The White House did all those things and the right-wing Anti-American party is 100% in support of it.

Great post. That's like the Diego Rivera murals in Mexico. He was a member of the Communist party. He attacked Mexican society and capitalism. I remember my Dad rolling his eyes as the tour guide was speaking, lol. Anyway, I can hate commies and still support not totally destroying art.

Huh. I wonder if this mural was the inspiration for those murals in the tv show Parks and Recreation?
