Interesting story, not a huge amount of money involved in the big scheme of things and a scam that's been around for ages.

What is controversial about it is that gold is one of the major ways that wealthy Chinese smuggle their wealth out of the country which amounts to approx $20billion a year.

Raises a lot of questions about a country where the elite and wealthy strive to trasfer money out of the country so they have some sort of fall-back somewhere else.

Goes to show they have more faith in the US system which is why Trump should hang tough on China

It doesn't say anything like that in the article It is not a Chinese problem, they also mention Japan for instance.

People smuggle some of their wealth outside all the time, even here from safe Europe. Why else would Ronaldo, entrepreneurs etc. have millions of euros on shady islands in the Caribbean? Or in Swiss bank accounts before the secrecy was partly abandoned?
