The latest issue politicians are pandering to voters about is high gasoline prices.
I just got back from a trip to California, which I believe has the highest gas prices in the country. It was averaging right at around $4/gallon. As I drove down the freeways I passed, or more often was passed, by one gas guzzling SUV and pickup truck after another. The roads were filled with them.
So , not only were many people driving these 4WD vehicles, most of which looked like they had never been off a paved road in their existence, but they were also burning even more fuel by going considerably over the speed limit. Not trying single out California as that is true everywhere. But people can instantly cut their gas bill in half by driving smaller passenger cars and if they aren't doing that, then they must not be hurting that much even in high priced California and I wish the media would spare me all the sob stories about how high gas prices are hurting people.
BTW, I am not anti-SUV. I believe in the individual freedom to buy what you want. But...I also believe in being responsible for the consequences of your own actions and not blaming government for your problems.

ITA with you about SUVs. I don't think they should be illegal or anything, but I can't stand them. I was in the car with my dad the other day while he parallel parked his Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was painful. I actually said, "Dad, why don't you buy a smaller car?"

I could just never imagine driving one of those. Personally I love zipping around in a smaller car. SUVs feel like heavy constipation.

I too agree about one taking responsibility for one's actions, in particular, with respect to the size of the car one buys; however, the government *is* to blame for:

1) Not managing our domestic oil supply properly,
2) Allowing a Federal Reserve System that devalues our currency.

Not all SUV's are 4 wheel drive

SUV's are fun to drive

Gas is cheap. Dirt cheap. Filthy dirt cheap.

It's fun to watch people snivel and cry over it. Even more fun to watch people get hot under the collar at the gas station. Maybe they should cool off with a nice cold Icee (or Slurpee?)

Nothing is more fun to drive than a rally car in competition

I enjoy our SUV, it is comfortable and is great for giving extra people a ride, along with our Saint Bernard.

How's about the buses, here in Washington, I see driving all over the place with 2 or 3 people in them, how responsible is that?

Modern buses get 5-7 miles per gallon. Older models still in service in some areas get around 4. As soon as that third guy gets on, the bus is doing about as well as to considerably better than one guy cruising along in his SUV. Your car would have to get over 40 mpg for you even to begin competing on a per passenger basis with the average bus in a major urban area...

Saw another interesting presentation and demo out here in California, from a company claiming to have converted a Saturn Vue to a vehicle capable of getting 150 MPG in normal cycle driving. This assumes 340 mi/wk (17,680 mi/yr) in a mixed urban/highway drive cycle.
