This is correct. This nation has always been an ongoing 'work in progress', and here, more than anywhere on earth, we really ARE the 'masters of our own destiny'. As a free people, our society is, and will continue to be, what we make it.
Ongoing freedom and prosperity will happen (if it does) because "we" make the effort to ensure that it happens....by playing down our 'differences' and emphasizing our common goals. This will depend on our being able to define just exactly how we define ourselves...in other words, what do we mean when we call ourselves "us".
On the other hand, a gradual descent into a contentious, balkanized society of hostile ethnic groups, held together by force of law, each resentful of the others, may ALSO happen. And if it does, it will be because we "let" it happen. This will happen if we can't agree on a definition of "us". Or if we don't see our laws as being 'fair'...or why we should obey them, if we don't agree with them.
Unfortunately, the FIRST scenario is exceedingly rare in history...a truly free multiracial society, enjoying a high level of prosperity, and a high level of individual freedom AND personal accountability, held together under a benevolent, mutually-agreed upon set of laws, emphasizing a shared sense of "we-ness" (i.e. 'nationhood'). Only a VERY FEW places fit this description..and the US has always been one of them....so far.
The SECOND scenario is depressingly common...a balkanized multicultural collection of various 'tribes', each jealously cognizant of ITS 'uniqueness', while making sure the other groups don't 'get away' with more than their share.....with a STRONG sense of ethnic pride, a strong sense of "group rights", a weak sense of personal accountability, a general mistrust of "the law", and a very WEAK sense of common purpose or 'nationhood'. This describes MANY societies...Most of them, unfortunately, violent, third-world places.
This is a free society. How we choose to 'run' it will determine whether it stays that way or not. But membership in the prosperous "First World" is not guaranteed. It can be lost, unless the effort is put forth to 'take care' of things. If this happens, the Third World is a big place....and there's plenty of room there for us, if that's what we choose.
